OpenAI adds GIF creation to ChatGPT with Images 2.6 model

ChatGPT can now generate animated GIFs from text or photos, adjust speed and edit frames, as Images 2.6 rolls out to all users.

OpenAI released the Images 2.6 model, extending ChatGPT and Codex on web, desktop and mobile with native animated GIF generation.

Users can start a GIF from a written prompt or an uploaded image, then change playback speed or modify individual frames inside the chat interface.

OpenAI demonstrated a cat‑dancing GIF, showing the model keeps the character recognizable across frames, a task earlier models struggled with.

The update also speeds up ordinary image generation; OpenAI says more than four billion images are produced each week across ChatGPT and its API, up from three billion in September.

For developers, the API now offers GPT‑Image‑2.6 “Flare” for efficient generation and “Sunburst” for higher‑quality output, both first introduced with Image 2.5.

What it means for you

For everyday users, the feature turns a simple prompt into shareable animations without extra tools. For developers and those preferring free or local models, the shift highlights OpenAI’s focus on cloud‑based image services, underscoring the need for open‑source alternatives that can run locally.
